The Lexicon of Poisons

Description

This is a piece of the much larger book about Herblore. It is usually a scroll with a red or black border; designed to warn the reader that these substances are dangerous. The work is rarely illuminated or illustrated; although it badly needs both before it can be considered more than a list of poisons and a reference to other works.

History

The lexicon is an old reference, having been ascribed to an author around 500TR. The work is Hârn-specific and is written for someone who can easily associate the plant to the name given within the Lexicon.

The list is not exhaustive; containing at most 80% of the known poisons on the island. The list only includes poisons from a single plant or plant-part. Poisons that consist of several ingredients or the plant itself if cooked, steamed, etc. are noticeable absent.

Most libraries with this scroll often have secondary and tertiary lists that add to this information.

It is assumed by the Save-K’norian church that this work was originally designed as a memory aide to herbalists. It was never intended to be a guide for either finding or identifying poisons by anything other than the symptoms they create. Antidotes for these poisons are also not listed in this work.

NOTE: Some consider this work to be Navehian in origin as that religion has a special love of poisons. In combination with the full volume on herbs, it is very helpful - as most of the poisons are illustrated at least once in the list of herbs, if not in the lexicon of poisons. A small Save-K’norian church in Geishtei is said to be currently working on a volume combining all the lore of poisons into one place.
