Songs of Tharda
Every country has its songs, and the soldiers songs are often the best know, and the longest lived. So here then are a bunch of songs I've collected that the Thardic Legion sings. Neither being a poet, or musically inclined I've searched the web for relavant songs and modified them as necessary. Copyright information is given wherever possible.

Over the Hills
This song is a common marching tune dating back to the 18th century in England. Versions were sung by the Britsh soldiers in Flanders, and American revolutionaries in the British Colonies. The song regained popularity with the "Sharpe" television series (based on the books by Bernard Cornwall.) Here then is the Thardic rendition:
Over the Hills with Heart we go,
To fight the proud insulting foe,
Our country calls and we'll obey,
Over the Hills and far away.

Chorus
            Over the Mountains dreary waste,
To meet the enemy we haste,
Our Land commands and we'll obey
Over the Hills and far away.

Whoe'er is bold, whoe'er is free,
Will join and come along with me,
To drive the enemy without delay
Over the Hills and far away.

Chorus
Over the rocks and over the steep,
Over the waters, wide and deep,
We'll drive the enemy without delay,
Over the Hills and far away.

On fair Thards's Banks we stand,
             Sword and Shield in hand,
The Enemy are beat, they dare not stay,
But take to their heels, and run away.

Chorus
Over the rocks and over the steep,
Over the waters, wide and deep,
We'll drive the enemy without delay
Over the Hills and far away.

Ballad Of The Legionnaires's Wife
This is the Ballad of the Soldier with the names changed to better fit a legionnaire's life in Fobin. The song was sung by Faithful Marriane, on their album: Non-Album Tracks.
What was sent to the legionnaires's wife
From the ancient cities of Coranan?
From Coranan came a pair of high heeled shoes,
With a kiss or two came the high heeled shoes
From the ancient city of Coranan.

What was sent to the soldier's wife
From Imrum north of the Thard?
From Imrum there came a collar of fur,
How it pleases her, the little collar of fur
From Imrum north of the Thard.

What was sent to the soldier's wife
From the wealth of Shiranan ?
From Shiranan he got her a hat,
             She looked sweet in that,
             In her cute little hat
             From the wealth of Shiranan.

What was sent to the soldier's wife
From Geishtei in the flat land ?
From Geishtei he sent her those laces so rare
             To have and to wear,
             All those laces so rare
From Geishtei in the flat land.

What was sent to the soldier's wife
From Cestor, city of mystery ?
In Cestor he got her a silken gown,
'Twas ended in town that silken gown
             From Cestor city of mystery.

What was sent to the soldier's wife
             From the South from Fobin?
From Fobin he sent her a shirt
Embroidered and pert, that Kandian shirt
             From the South from Fobin.

What was sent to the soldier's wife
From the far-off Rethem land ?
From Rethem there came just a widow's veil
For her dead to bewail in her widow's veil
             From the far-off Rethem land,
             From the far-off Rethem land.

Soldiers Prayer
This is a song by Tolkki Timo on the album "Classical Variations And Themes". It fits nicely into the Legion atmosphere without change.
Stars shine bright in the sky
             Warning you gonna die
Freezing winds blows across the snow plains
             Here all alone
             Marching towards the front line
Hoping this is the last time
Fighting for what I don't know
             Praying something I can't conceive

Wont you please save my soul
Trying to find my way home
Kill or be killed is the law in this mad game
Won't you please save my life
             I'm not ready to die
Just trying to find my way back to home again

What is wrong with the mankind?
All those things that you can find
             We just waste our time
             War is just another crime
             Marching towards the front line
Hoping this is the last time
Fighting for what I don't know
             Praying something I can't conceive

Wont you please save my soul
Trying to find my way home
Kill or be killed is the law in this mad game
Won't you please save my life
             I'm not ready to die
Just trying to find my way back to home again

Wont you please save my soul
Trying to find my way home
Kill or be killed is the law in this mad game
Won't you please save my life
             I'm not ready to die
Just trying to find my way back to home again

When You Are A Soldier
This song is by Chapman Steven Curtis on the album "For The Sake Of The Call". Another one that needs no modification. Copyright information: (Steven Curtis Chapman; ©1990 Sparrow Song (a div. of The Sparrow Corp)/Careers Music Inc (BMG)/Greg Nelson Music (admin. by Careers Music Inc (BMG)) (BMI)
When you are a soldier, I will be your shield
I will go with you into the battlefield
And when the arrows start to fly
Take my hand and hold on tight
I will be your shield, cos I know how it feels
             When you are a soldier

When you're tired from running, I will cheer you on
Look beside you and you'll see you're not alone
And when your strength is all but gone
I'll carry you until you're strong

And I will be your shield, cos I know how it feels
             When you're a soldier

I will be the one you can cry your songs to
My eyes will share your tears
And I'll be your friend if you win or if you're
            defeated
Whenever you need me I will be there

When you're lost in darkness, I will hold the light
I will help you find your way through the night
I'll remind you of the truth
And keep the flame alive in you

And I will be your shield, cos I know how it feels
             When you are a soldier
And I will be your shield, cos I know how it feels
             When you are a soldier

Milities Linari
This one is by Magnum on the album "Chase the Dragon." Milities Linari means "Soldiers of the Line" - so I've just gone through and replaced the phrase "Soldiers of the Line" with "Milities Linari".
Milities Linari how does it feel
You're far away from home polishing steel
The sun moves in between the mountain and sky
As dawn puts out its fingers splitting them wide

Milities Linari what do you know
About the other side, they never show
They must be well disguised biding their time
Their armour well prepared so nothing will shine

Milities Linari would you kill me
There's something in your eyes stopping you see
They're cloudy and you turn your head away
What's that rolling down your face, are you OK?

Hold back those tears from your eye
             Don't show those feelings inside
             You're in a murderous playground
War games on a castle wall
             You're in a murderous playground
Crossed out if you dare to fall

            Milities Linari it isn't fair
You're bleeding deep inside nobody cares
Your flag and lance stand proud splintered and red
No movement in the field, the crows will be fed

Milities Linari you've come to the end
You'll never get to see your mother again
Some unfamiliar place you're going to stay
An unremembered name an unforgettable day

Charolais , The March
Horslips from the album "This isThe Tain"
Notes from the Lyrics Server: The Brown Bull of Cooley, the semi-mythical beast of the Tain certainly wasn't the gentle Charolais, but the tongue-in-cheek lyrics are in keeping with the Tain's eccentric narrative style. We've used a traditional melody Rosc Catha na Mumhan which means the Battle Hymn of Munster. This also forms the basis for the March.
Her words were sharp; they cut him deep,
In a war between the sheets.
But when he brought his bull to her
It meant a woman making war
             Beyond the eiderdown.

            The druids read the smoke and sand;
Told her that she would love again.
The rhythms from the wolfskin drums
Called men to war in hide and bronze.
             This goddess wore a crown.

            Charolais, charolais -
we are come for you today.
The champions and the Seven Sons are
come to take away the Donn

            But the Fairy Child knew more;
Saw the host stained red in war,
Saw the hero-light around the head
Of a dragon-boy just ripe for bed
             Of wives and manly sons.

Forced March
By Random Ruins Of Reality from the album "Art.46"
the path is rough the front is far
and I'm going there on forced march
the rage's so high that covers pain
they'll know my might before be slain
             Rit.

I will make it without a scar
beyond the red zone on the chart
'cause I've a gun in search for fame
and my friend death who's never late
             they'll die without any pain
             I kown I'm insane
             but life's too short
             to be wasted

I'm on a quest for fame
             and so I'm goin'
             on a forced march
             on a forced march
             on a forced march
the path is rough the front is far
but I'm still going on forced march
yes, it's the war the life I chose
and all I know is I can't lose
I won't be late to the date
I am heading straight to my fate
I know it's not such a just cause
but I will get the damn job done
             Rit.

How Many Miles Must We March
By Harper Ben from the album "Welcome To The Cruel World"
Exactly how much will have to burn
before we will look to the past to learn
we walk along this endless path
which has led us in a circle
so here we are right back
we can't let the future become our past
if we are to change the world
             won't you tell me
             tell me please
how many miles must we march
how many miles must we march

When I was a baby I was not prejudiced
             hey how about you
             this was something
             that I learned in school
something they taught us to do
we can't let the future become our past
if we are to change the world
             won't you tell me
             tell me please
how many miles must we march
how many miles must we march

            There must come a day
when a box is not somebody's home
the unfinished work of our heroes
             must truly be our own
we can't let the future become our past
if we are to change the world
             won't you tell me
             tell me please
how many miles must we march
how many miles must we march
how many miles must we march
how many miles must we march
how many miles must we march
how many miles must we march

We March
By Prince from the ablum "The Gold Experience"
March, we march, march, we march
If this is the same avenue my ancestors fought 2 liberate how
            come
I can't buy a piece of it even if my credit is straight and if
            all the
water's dirty and I wanna lay the pipe my dammy the river
That I drink from will it be the same as your mammy?
             Now's the time 2 find a rhyme
That's got a reason and frees the mind
From angry thoughts -the racist kind if we all want to change
then come and get in line the next time we march
We're kickin' down the door next time we march
All is what we're marching 4
If this is the same sister u cannot stop calling a bitch
It will be the same one that will leave your broke ass in a
            ditch
If u cannot find a better reason 2 call this woman otherwise,
            then
don't cry u made the bed in which u lie

Chorus
March, we march, march, we march
             Now we clarify 4ever
In other words as long as it takes
That we ain't got no use 4 ice cream without the cake
And we ain't got no time 4 excuses
The promised land belongs 2 all
We can march in peace but u best watch yo back
             If another leader falls
March, we march, march, we march

Chorus
SOUNDS OF VIOLENCE.
AUTHOR UNCREDITED.
TUNE IS " SOUNDS OF SILENCE "
            Hello broadsword my old friend
I've come to fight with you again
Because the sounds of battle ringing
In my ears has me singing
And the rock that I have instead of a brain
             Still remains
I love the sounds of violence

            In tournaments I fight alone
I leave my melee gear at home
But when I go down to the Rethem border
I often fight in groups of five or more
When my friend was stabbed by an eastern spear in the head
             He was dead
Touched by the sounds of violence

            A thousand footmen waging war
             A hundred archers maybe more
Polemen thrusting from the second row
Shieldmen dying, they're the first to go
Two-stick fighters can harry the enemy flank
             They've got rank
And love the sounds of violence

            Foolishly I pressed ahead
I'd be a hero or be dead
A belted fighter tried to teach me
With his polearm he might reach me
But my blows like violent hailstones fell
             And struck well
             Causing the sounds of violence

            Eastrelm fighters fell and died
             Before the advancing midrealm tide
And we shouted out our battle cry
We would conquer or we would die
And the bards sing the deeds of the fighters that bravely fall
             And they all
             Whisper the sounds of violence

A GRAZING MACE
            (verses 1-5 by Skald-Brandr Toralfsson
verse 6 is the original anonymous creation
verse 7 from the HOPSFA Hymnal 3rd Edition)

A grazing mace, how sweet the sound, that felled my foe for me
I bashed his head, he struck the ground, and thus came victory
My mace has taught my foes to fear, that mace my fear relieved
How precious did my mace appear, when I my mace received

Through many tourneys wars and fairs, I have already come
My mace has brought me safe thus far, my mace will bring me home

The King has promised good to me, his word my hope secures
I will his shield and weapon be, when he gives me my spurs
And when my mace my foeman nails, that mortal strife shall
            cease
And we'll possess within our pale, a life of joy and peace

A grazing mace, how sweet the sound that flattened a wretch like
            thee!
Whose head is flat, that once was round; done in by my mace....and
            me!

A grazing mace, how sweet the sound that smites a foe like thee
You're left there lying on the ground, you've left the
            field to me!

What Shall We Pray For
This one was sung at HarvestFaire, put on by La Grande Tente, during feast.
Modified for Tharda.
            What shall we pray for?
