Laranian prayers

This is where you can talk about HârnWorld places, people, religion, magic, society and cultures, etc. Ask questions about towns and cities, ruins, mines, and gargun nests, mysterious map references, and battle sites. Can be published commercially or by fans, it doesn't matter.

Laranian prayers

#1 Post by Sageryne » Sat Dec 02, 2017 2:23 am

Hi all,

I am joining a new game, where I will be playing a Laranian priest. I have thought and written a lot about the "big picture" of the Laranian church. However, as I created this new character, I realized I had not thought a lot about day to day things like what sort of prayer or salutation a priest might use with another character.

Here is a priestly blessing I came up with and some salutations:

Blessing:

The LADY guide you and shield you;
The LADY instill duty and honour to govern you,
And make you just;
The LADY raise her sword to inspire you,
And give you courage.

Salutations:

"Larani shield you"
"Larani guild your sword"
"Glory unto Larani"

Does anyone have prayers, blessings, or salutations they use that would be willing to share?

TTYL

Kerry

Blessing:

May Mendiz give you courage.
May your causes be worthy of Dolithor.
May your endeavours be as valorous as St. Ambrathas.

Salutation:
By the mane of Mendiz (it is cold tonight etc).

Goddess be at your side!

Words of warning:
Words fly up, thoughts remain below. Words without thoughts never to Dolithor go.

Whatever you do, don't mention the Solori crusade.....
Plots and schemes are the same thing..

The Knights of Tirith watch over you.
(standard wish for safety and protection.)

Dolithor's Gates!!
(exclamation: something grand, overwhelming)

You'd have me pull Mendiz's tail?!
(colloquialism: to attempt something both foolish and impossible; to send someone on a fool's errand)

The Red Lady smite you!
(a curse, . . . plus other vulgar connotations)

A Malnirala board is checkered too.
(exhortation for attention to the details of church symbols and observances)

Avarkiel, strike true!
spoken as a quiet, urgent prayer over one's weapon before combat, or as a call to arms and battle cry in the midst of it

Avarkiel strkes true.
spoken knowingly among the faithful after success in combat, or when the wicked are singled out for justice . . . obviously by the will of Larani

By all the privies of Dolithor!
expression of consternation; profanity, which of course means its usage and meanings are ever widening, particularly among common born adherents, and the rank-and-file of the fighting orders. Related to a number of colloquialisms . . .

The good souls who clean the privies of Dolithor have already achieved more in the eyes of the Lady than any living King.
Colloquialism meant to demonstrate that the path to Tirithor is through humility, obedience, and good works in the name of the Goddess. Innumerable variants exist, despite it being doubtful whether there are in fact privies in Dolithor. Very likely, these expressions are the work of village priests and fighting order chaplains attempting to make parables from the profanity, above.

And now for an actual Prayer:

Gracious Lady
guide my hand
that I might do your Will
to strike the Wicked.

Gracious Lady
strengthen my arm
that I might do your Will
to defend the Righteous.

Gracious Lady
grant me the fortitude
that I might do your Will
to stand to the Last.

Gracious Lady
grant me the wisdom
that I might do your Will
to be your humble Servant.

Sounds more like Peonian to me.

I'm sure it's much debated in fighting order mess halls:
It would appear that, once they get to heaven, Laranians have to shovel their own sh!t.
The Peonians are all in Valon, where they get to shovel what Maermal provides. :scared:

By Dolithor's Gates! Those are awesome!

'Surely there are no privies in Dolithor ... the sanctimonious bitch would never allow anyone to be so profane as to $#@! there. That's why you lot are so full of it!'

Overheard before a brawl between one if the more erudite members of the Cohorts of Gashang and some Laranian legionaries, in Shiran.
