Trierzon Regional Module Download Problems

#1 Post by Leitchy » Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:16 am

Some people have mentioned having issues with the downloading and I experience them too. I have no idea why it works for some people and not others, but I have added a directly link at the bottom of the page. This doesn't count the download, unfortunately, but if you attempt to download the file normally (i.e., by licking the download arrows first) and it doesn't work, the counter clicks over anyway.

If you had problems with the regular download link and had to use the backup, please let me know here or via PM. I'd like to know your browser type and version (IE7, FF2, Opera9, etc.) and what behaviour you saw. It can take a long time (a few minutes) for anything to happen, so please wait for a bit. If nothing happens after 5mins, then kill the process and let me know that, too.

Hopefully, with your help, I can isolate the problem so it won't happen in the future to other downloads.
Cheers

I had no trouble at 20:30 Boston time Sunday night.
IE 6, cable modem.
When it was done, the download page stayed open and blank, but the downloaded .ZIP was fine.
Heroes should be uncommon. They just happen to be the PCs.

I showed the problem to a friend who maintains one of the IT systems here at work, and he asked to see the code for the download mechanism. A quick glance and he said "There's your problem, right there. Here, this stuff is one line now..." typed a single line, commented out a dozen lines and hey, presto...it works. :)

I've tried both IE7 and Firefox 2.0.12. They both receive a white page that says "External Links to Download Files Not Permitted". :(

The download link should be http://www.lythia.com/download-manager.php?id=160

It's definitely working for me using both those browsers. Flush your browser cache and try again, Joe. If this isn't the link you're seeing, use the one below and let me know here.

It's a firewall setting on my end. I flushed the cache, but got the same error. I disabled the firewall and everthing worked.

Thanks for helping out this poor ol' paranoid...

I don't know if this will help others, but I had some trouble downloading the module as well. When I went to download it, it took well over 10 minutes before I was able to start downloading. However, after that it went rather quickly. If people give me a list of names here I would gladly email it to them.

While using IE7, I got the message "External Links to Download Files Not Permitted" from the first link, http://www.lythia.com/download-manager.php?id=160
When I tried the Alternate link, http://www.lythia.com/files/harnworld/trierzon_rm.zip
it worked perfectly. Now I can start reading. This may take awhile! Thanks to all involved!

Best guess for the "external download" issue is this:
The download checker enforces a rule that the referrer header must be for lythia.com, otherwise it blocks access.
Some firewalls (Norton being a prime example) remove the referrer header from web requests for "security" reasons.

No good reason I've ever found, but that's their excuse.

Other ways to cause it would be to bookmark the link and try it from your bookmarks.
Or direct from an email (not web mail) would also be likely to trigger it.
