BIG CHANGES --- well, for me, anyway

#1 Post by Leitchy » Mon Oct 02, 2017 12:16 pm

OK, now that I've got your attention, I'm in the process of moving Lythia.com and the Harnforum (and hence, Harshlands too) to a virtual private server.

The addition of a substantial number of new members, both from Harshlands and since GenCon 2017, has put a strain on the old shared hosting server, and I've been getting an increasing number of notices from the hoster about poor performance. The solution is to move from shared hosting to my own virtual private server (VPS).

This increased the cost of the hosting, but for right now, I'll absorb that cost. I might look at doing a Patreon arrangement, but I need to investigate that more to see that it's not just handing them a heap of money for no real gain on our side.

Anyway, the move from the shared server to the VPS is happening now, so you MAY experience some disruptions for a few hours.
Cheers

+1 from me. I know I'm a relative newcomer re: contributing to the forums, but the contents of the Lythia.com archive and the forums here have made an enormous difference to my Harnmaster experiences. Thank you, Peter.

Do please set up a Patreon or something similar. I'd happily donate. My understanding of Patreon is that they take some small percent of the donations (5% plus any payment processing and funds transfer fees) but are pretty reasonable to work. I only interact with Patreon as a donor, but I find it very user friendly.

Of course, if the number of donors is too small, it may not be worth the hassle, but that's something I can't judge.

Good on you, Peter! I echo the suggestion to set up a Patreon. I would also be happy to donate to keep this wonderful forum going.

Well done Peter. There's life here yet.

Would pruning some defunct accounts help? Or us it to do with load rather than memory?

It's not clear exactly what the problem is (or rather...was), but I suspect it's related to the volume of traffic (ie, number of users reading and posting), and that has a direct impact on database load. Pruning old users who don't post wouldn't make any difference. Pruning posts goes against the principle of building up a searchable archive of thoughts on Harn topics.

It might mean I have to move the database to a VPS as well...that will effectively double the price per month again, so I'll see how this goes for a couple of months first before I make that move.

Mind you, if I did, then the site would be very fast indeed!

:)

A more cynical thought is that the reported problems are a bid by the hoster to get me off the cheaper hosting and onto one that makes them more money. Looking at their user discussion forums, that's a real possibility that many are wondering about. If so, I'm not actually all that concerned; it's been the same price for the past 10 years....how many other charges can you say that about??
Cheers

Just a side note: You could also try out the services of uberspace. They provide what is essential a linux based shared hosting package for a pay-what-you-want rate. There is no fancy browser based administration and you need to know a bit about managing linux with a ssh-account, but you get a better performance than the usual shared hosting one for a fair price and you don't have to do the administration and security of your server yourself. I don't think they have an English version of their homepage though. Looks all German to me.

Would it be possible to use this opportunity to give all the Harshlands' topics a forum of their own?
This would make the ‘new posts’ page for the HarnForum better suited to those of us who are not into Harshlands.

Hi Peter,

As always, I am your biggest fan. The value of the work you do keeping Harnforum and Lythia.com working is immeasurable to our community.

I would happily make a monthly contribution to supporting the service. I currently support some YouTube channels through Patreon and find it a very easy system to use.

I as well, though I must say I haven't seen any performance issues worth noting.

So there's this remote yet distinct possibility that you've been conned/intimidated/seduced/reasoned/whatevered into an upgrade? But isn't that how a lot of technological progress happens always? Making you feel somewhat inadequate or insecure and simultaneously providing a BRIGHT NEW AND SHINY solution, that's just good salesmanship.

Oh, and as they say these days, with all due solemnity: Thank you for your service Leitchy.

Edited for proper spelling

Incorrect tense there Mac, but erudite and entertaining nonetheless. Good to hear the forum is continuing to grow btw 😁

Mac has pointed out that Our esteemed host has already transferred to the more expensive upgrade provided by the previous server so my observation is incorrect. My apologies, I could not tell that from the posts.

I just wanted to chime in to say: Thanks Leitchy! I think that Harn is, of all rpgs still being actively published, the one for which the ratio of (fan support)/(publisher support) is greatest; and most of the fan support is channeled through lythia.com.

I know Harshlands has benefited from Patreon sponsors to keep it hosted on Linode and I hope Lythia gets setup with something similar. Harshlands would be happy to divert some of its patronage towards such a fine forum host. Patreon has been nothing but a good thing for Harshlands. A dollar a month means nothing to most people but those add up to no money required out of a hosts pocket at the end of the month.
