HârnCon 9 Wellington, New Zealand, 21-23 Jan 2011 - Overview

#1 Post by Fastred » Thu Dec 17, 2009 4:47 am

Hello everyone

It is now just a little over 1 year before HârnCon "Middle Earth" will be held in January 2011, in Wellington, New Zealand.

The dates for HârnCon "Middle-Earth" will be from the evening of Friday 21 to the evening of Sunday 23 January 2011.

(Monday 24 January 2011 is a holiday in Wellington, so your host will be available to support 'tours' on that day.)

This is "early warning" notice; soon we will announce other arrangements.

Look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible - particularly the Mernati (Aussies...).

Regards

Jeremy Baker (aka Fastred)
Host, HârnCon "Middle-Earth"

I've already warned my boss that I am planning to take time off in 13 months...he said yes...more importantly, I have approval from the home front to spend the money and take the time.

WAY to early for me to say if I can make it or not. To much happening in the next 6 months to say if I can... But I can wish to be 'down under' as it were.

The missus has given me in principle approval - so long as she and the kids get to come to NZ too.

So funds and visas permitting, we'll be there. :D

Well, judging the flight prices from Germany to NZ, I am not able to afford this until a. my boss will give me a real and big wage rise, b. I get a nice new and well paid job or c. I win in a lottery. :?

Perhaps time to train my ethereal travel skills...

I'm tentatively putting this on the calendar, but budget may be a constraint as my wife likely won't let me go without her and our two boys and likely at least one set of grand parents...

OK. I'll be there. Least I can do is make a jump across the puddle. :) Might spend a couple of weeks in the land of the Long White Cloud. About time I checked out the neighbours...

;)

Hmmm...I wonder if I should run a Hârn game using Savage Worlds??
Cheers

No committment, but a big interest. Always wanted to visit NZ, and could be that the whole family will go.

Price is a bit prohibitive - I got 16000SEK (approx 1600Euro) for ONE person. Should be possible to go cheaper, shall go head to head with a travel agency.

Seeing as I am so near to Wellignton I had better be there as well. :)

I have a small farmlet 2.5 hours drive from Wellington so anyone who wants is welcome to spend some time relaxing at my place.

I might take you up on that, Brian. Since I also own a small farmlet, we can talk about small farmlet things while watching the grass grown. :)

What qualifies as a small farmlet in your part of the world? Is the production of agricultural products a requirement? Or is all rural acreage considered a farmlet? Is there a certain minimum size?

I have 8 acres, two hereford steers, five chooks, seven cats, two rabbits, wife, two kids and a dog. Then there are the herons, pheasants, wood pigeons and those bloody annoying Aussie cockatoos and bloody annoying possums, which I shoot at frequently - and sometimes hit.

As to what qualifies as a farmlet? I am not sure - perhaps anything under 20 acres? I have no idea really. However, it is a 70km return trip if we run out of milk so we are not talking Aussie ooutback material here.

Oh yeah - for added interest we have river of acidic water running down the valley.

My farmlet is 20 acres (8.1 hectares for our metric savvy friends) with four people and one cat. :) And a lot of bloody annoying Aussie cockatoos we *aren't* allowed shoot (heck, I'm not allowed to own a gun without jumping through a million stupid rules...and paying through the nose for the privilege).

My property is not a working farm; it's classified as "rural-residential". In other words, I have an enormous backyard. And a pretty big front yard too. :) And it's 17km to the nearest shopping centre for me, so milk isn't far away. ;)

I bet my bottom dollar that Brian's farm is more fertile than mine, however. Australia is a big, old, tired country. :)

Sorry for hijacking the thread, I was just curious how my farmlet (5+ acres and 2+ horses) stacked up against those down your way.

I love the solitude of the place. I have to work in Wellington three dayss a week so I really enjoy getting home and really hate leaving.

Lietchy - I am not sure we are allowed to shoot the cockatoos, but the possums are fair game. There are millions of th little bastards here. However, I am more deadly in the car than I am with a rifle. I got five on the road last week in 5km - three in 100m. Took a bit of swerving for sure.

Hi Jeremy,

Just to let you know that my passport application has been approved and I am currently looking at flight deals. It's still not a sure thing but I am now at least hopeful of getting there... :multi:

I have managed to get my annual leave sorted, so I am able to make it

I am coming from Aust and have some basic familiarity with Wellington (although I know Palmerston North well)
Any suggestions as far as good accomodaton options in windy Wellington?

I know it is early, but is there any ideas on which part of Wellington the venue is likely to be located?

Hi Wayfarer and everyone else

I hope to be able to post about the location of HarnCon Wellington in the next week or so, once I have confirmed the venue etc.

It will almost certainly be in the Cuba Street area / precinct - which is the funky, interesting part of town that I live and work in, where there are quite a few reasonably priced hotels and lots of great places to eat :)

Wellington is not a large city, area-wise. The downtown area is pretty much all all walkable.

Regards

Jeremy

Last time I was in Wellington I had a broken leg. Loved the medical bills there, but not enough to break my leg again. That was close to 30 years ago. Time to make another visit, but this time stay off Franz Josef Glacier.

Hmmm... if I'm half villein, what's the other half?
