Howdy folks, it's been a while.

I can't find any official rules for the effects of missing sleep or inadequate fluids intake. I know lack of water is not a problem most of the time on Harn itself, but I'm still curious. I'm also wondering abut missing sleep. It came up in the last HarnMaster game I ran.

I found this model years ago (I think it was modified from AD&D Wilderness Survival Guide)and have used it since very effectively - to the chagrin of my players, who must now factors their character sleep requirments into their nighttime sentry duty.

SLEEP
Every character requires at least 1d4+4 hours (fixed) of sleep every 24 hours (need not be consecutive), but no more than 2 hours beyond that minimum can be slept. It is possible to train oneself to go with less sleep, and the minimum hours required can drop by up to 20%.

A special Sleeplessness Universal Penalty is imposed on all MLs according to how many hours less than the minimum required per 24 hours were slept that day/night (Fractions rounded up):

2 HOURS LESS: -5 ML
4 HOURS LESS: -10 ML
6 HOURS LESS: -15 ML
8 HOURS LESS: -20 ML
10 HOURS LESS: -25 ML
12 HOURS LESS: -30 ML

The above fatigue is special in that it cannot be negated until the character sleeps fitfully for the minimum hours. Note also that the values are NOT cumulative. If, say, on day 1 a PC who needs to sleep for 7 hours sleeps for 3 hours, he will suffer a -10 ML penalty. If, on day 2 the PC only sleeps for 1 hour, he will suffer a -15 ML penalty the next day. If on day 3, the PC sleeps for 6 hours, the next day he will only suffer -5 ML penalty.

The sleep must be good. This is defined as:

THE NUMBER OF HOURS SLEPT,
-1 HR, IF CHARACTER NOT PRONE OR IN RELAXED POSITION.
-1 HR, IF LYING ON BARE GROUND (NO BLANKET/PADDING).
-1 HR, PER 1-IL SUFFERED IN WORST INJURY.
-1 HR, IF FREEZING TEMPERATURE.
-2 HRS, IF HOT TEMPERATURE.
-2 HRS, IF WINDFORCE IS 2+ WITH NO SHELTER.
-3 HRS, IF PRECIPITATION WITH NO SHELTER.
-3 HRS, IF WEARING RIGID OR METAL BODY ARMOUR, OR
-4 HRS, IF WEARING PLATE BODY ARMOUR.

These adjustments are cumulative (except the last two), and determine the hours effectively slept by a character.

No character can sleep without shelter in severe weather conditions (storms of any sort).

Thanks George, good rules.

Anything out there for lack of beverages?

While it doesn't happen much, my players can attest to the abundant amount of rain, snow, and sleet that falls on Harn.

But here is what I use; I tend to keep the rolls down, perfering pass/fail checks to degrees of pass/fail test.

Going Without Water
As a general rule, a character can go without water, for no more than (one-sixth of the average of his Stamina + 10% Original Body Weight) days before he begins to suffer adverse effects. Once this tolerance level is reached, and every (Endurance) Hours thereafter, the character loses (1d2%) of his body weight and must make a (3d6) Endurance Check, modified by any of the following conditions that apply

Endurance Modifiers
+2 If food with a high water contents is eaten (green plants, raw meat, fruits and vegetables)
+1 If female
-x Universal Penalty
-1 If consumes less than 100% of daily water requirement
-2 If consumes 50% or less, of daily water requirement
-4 If consumes 25% or less, of daily water requirement
-2 If temperature is Warm (20°C +)
-4 If temperature is Hot (30°C +)

Failure results in the accumulation of 1 (Dehydration) Injury Level, and when these Levels equal the character’s Stamina, he dies. This (Dehydration) Injury cannot be removed until the character starts drinking adequate amounts of water. For every day that a character receives his daily requirement of water, he may heal 1 (Dehydration) Injury Levels and regain (1d2%) of his body weight back.

Minimum Daily Water Requirement*
Heavy Activity = 4-Quarts
Normal Activity = 2-Quarts
Light Activity = 1-Quart

* Sindarin require one-quarter, and Khuzdul require one-third, less water.

These levels are subjective; but Normal Activity would be something like a character carrying a load, less than one-third his body weight, while walking for two watches along road.

Example
Rolf (Stamina 10), weighing 140-lbs, can go 2 days without water; after two-days without water, Rolf (Endurance 12) will begin to suffer the effect of Dehydration; he loses 1½ to 3-lbs of body weight and must make (3d6) Endurance Check -4 (drinking 25% or less), which he is successful. If after 12 hours, he still has failed to drink his daily requirement, and loses an additional 1½ to 3-lbs of body weight and must make (3d6) Endurance Check with a -4 (drinking 25% or less), which he failed. Rolf has now taken 1 (Dehydration) Injury Level. This process continues for 3 days (6 checks), which he has managed to fail 4 of the 6 checks, accumulating a total of 5 (Dehydration) Injury Levels.

Finally, Rolf has managed to find a spring, which provides him with ample water each day, and he begins to heal 1 (Dehydration) Injury Level each day, fully recovering after 5 days.

Like I said, this rule doesn't get used much, but it is in my GM Toolbox when the characters run out of water.

Just clarifying, it should be Levels and not points;

For each Injury Level there is a 5% Universal Penalty
