Re: Website Upgrade

#26 Post by Leitchy » Fri May 19, 2017 2:10 pm

While you're almost the highest poster, you're a couple of hundred shy of the record. I can't see any reason why that would have any bearing in the problem. But it does seem to be pretty (and weirdly) specific. So far, it's only you, Matt. :)

A couple of the other posters I'm keeping tabs on have posted and their counts have gone up properly. Nor is there anything in your database record that indicates any problems. I'm completely at a loss as to why right now. I'll research more over the weekend.

At least it doesn't stop you posting, just properly counting them. I can only think it's something wrong at a specific point. Can you try a completely different computer/device for me? Or have you already done that?
Cheers

One issue I've seen since the upgrade is that the RSS feed seems to be messed up. It is resending some older posts more than once. It's not a terrible problem, though.

Thanks. I post almost exclusively from my own Mac laptop or my iPad, and I think I used both today. I can try another machine tomorrow.

Very strange.

Edit: No count change. This post from iPad using Safari.

I find the old style looks better and is more efficiently laid out on both desktop and mobile browsers, but I don't think we're voting. I also use the "unread post" link all the time and find it a bit amusing/annoying that it is under "quick links" despite that making it actually less quick to access.

My count says 1248 before this post.

Edit: And still says 1248 after this post.

1666 before
1666 after

I hadn't noticed or thought to look.

On the layout is have mixed views. It's cleaner and more modern if a little harsh but it's less intuitive to use and doesn't flow as smoothly. If the niggles could be resolved it would work. That said they could be down to the system update.

It's an existential question: Was a post that isn't counted ever actually posted?

Edit: Still at 1248. So this post never happened. I could flame at will and not be held responsible by the admins.

All the drop down menus are expanded, making the board almost unreadable! Also, new baby girl! :) metrics in the Asolade Hundred OOC thread.

In the before-time, I dictated the theme of the site. The major upgrade of the forum software brought with it an updated theme...which I think isn't very good. So I added a couple more themes to play around with a see if I like them, and then let forum members have a say as well.

I've decided to make the choice of theme up to the individual. You can pick the theme you like best from your own User Control Panel (UCP) which you can access by clicking on the little symbol next to your username at the top right (under Search). Over the next few hours, I'll be adjusting the themes to the headers are all the same, but if you pick the Absolution theme, I'm pretty much done with that one now. Just a slight adjustment to the logo (it's getting clipped). :)

One side effect of fooling around with the logo and header information is that I seem to have corrected the issue with the old style, which is known as "AllanStyle-SUBSILVER". It was a pretty disgusting mess before (margins all wrong, missing icons, etc.), but seems to have come good. <shrug> I dunno how, but I'll take it. :)

The other two styles up so far are "prosilver" - which is the forum default style - and "Absolution", which is the darker blue, somewhat sharp style most of you said you didn't care for. I'll probably put up one or two more, but getting the header right is a bit of a pain...although most of the style have identical code which goes a long way to making things easy. :)

Actually, you posted in the OOC topic and your count went up. I noticed the same thing for bbailey, too. Why that should be so, I have no idea; my post count is still going up just fine wherever I post.. :(

I have rows, and rows, and rows of those page symbols on "Unread posts", "New posts" and "Your posts". Makes it kind of a challenge to read.

Anborn
I haven't had this before, but I have now. A lot of menus dropped down too, that won't roll up. At least opening the thread gets rid of the symbols.

You are fortunate I don't have control over titles. This would earn you the title of CAPTAIN WALKER.

While it looks fine on my desktop, I also get the jumble of symbols when I try the site from my iPhone. If there's an option to set it to a more mobile-friendly display, I can't see it through all the symbols overlaying the text.

Looks good on my android (both themes). My post count doesn't show on mobile so I can't take measure of that. Does it make sense to be an ios issue?

OK, I found a thing...

This forum (and a couple of others elsewhere) had different user permissions to regular forums (those in The Chantry, and The Alienage) and one of those permissions dealt with incrementing post counts...which I think is why Rothesay and other regular users DIDN'T get their post count increased by posting here but other, like myself, who have special permissions to this forum, did see an increase.

I have gone through all of the forums we have and altered where necessary to make sure that standard access applies (or read-only in the case of old convention forums). Let's see how THAT goes...

For the record, permissions are the hardest thing to understand in any computer system, and this one is no different. Even though it's designed to be as easy as possible, it's still confusing (and I'm supposed to be a pro about such things!)

Krazma, I'm beginning to wonder if it's a Safari issue, but it shouldn't be. A couple of things to try:
  • do the standard clearing of the browser's cache
  • log out, log back in
  • click the "Delete all board cookies" at the bottom of any HarnForum screen (except posting screens)
  • this will force a new login as well, with a new cookie
  • try a different style; you can access it through your UCP as I described in a previous post
Please let me know how that goes.
Cheers

The permissions theory strikes me as plausible. I'll be interested to see how that works out.

Edit: A plus - this post seems to have been counted. That leaves eight or so in BBailey's 'gray' area. If only I had taken advantage ... :?
