Anyone pondering the new release of Dragon Warriors for use with Harn? My group has been using the old books available, and will soon get the new Mongoose version, but we have been using the DW setting.

The RPG seems a good fit for Harn, and with some tweaking or using the fan-provided info out there it could work as well as RC D&D or Castles&Crusades.

I've never heard of the game until just a few moments ago. It reminds me of another RPG that was released in the paperback format, but I can't recall much about the rules or setting.

I don't have a lot of love for Mongoose. I think they built a following with their d20 Conan material, but never picked it up, since I was heavily into HMC at the time. I did get the first RuneQuest rulesbook and quickly lost interest in them as a publisher. I found it overpriced, and scored them poorly in areas of playtest, writing style, format, art choice, and page count.

The authors of this remake might not be inhouse talent, so there may be some hope there.

Did you play the original, how did it work? I do know Mongoose tends to rewrite games that are in keeping with the original rules (modified, updated, or altered slightly), so hearing someone else's game experience could go a lot farther in generating interest.

After a little reading, it looks like the authors of the original and the new version are one and the same. Unfortunately, the reviewer failed to whet my appetite with this comment (emphasis mine) - "Fans of the story loved Dragon Warriors for its campaign world of "Legend" which was quite closely modelled on our own Medieval history with a "Europe" under a unified monotheistic faith, and a "Middle-East" with its own version. "

I've just never been a fan of that sort of thing.

I've been playing the Legend setting I guess, but the setting is not what I'd call up to a Harniacs high standards. I was more curious if folks hereabouts had used this particular old horse to power Harn. I used AD&D1e way back when I first picked up the setting, and Dragon Warriors is an RPG of that vintage... though I hear it is more popular among gamers in the UK and Australia.

Its played like D&D-- fairly abstract combat and class-based. The power level is a bit lower since hit points are low and increase only a point per rank( DW for level) at best. I would use GURPS or HM1e to power a Harn game by preference, but the simulation and rules-heavier nature of these systems are anathema to my current group.

I have acquired an interest in this topic recently. The efforts so far can be seen at:

Go to the Wiki pages if you'd care to comment. And be advised that bringing DW into the mix of course changes the feel of things :).

This never got off the ground in Dragon Warriors mode. System has been shifted to GURPS, and so far 5 people are in.
