I'm using Mongoose's RuneQuest 2 to run Harn.

I know there are 6 convocations on the Pvaric Wheel, that one is primary and there are secondary and tertiary magics as well as the Diametric magic. I was hoping someone could tell me if there are penalties for casting magics other than your primary, or even if you can cast them at all?

Thank you

The penalties aren't on casting, rather they're on SB (skill base - natural affinity). If your SB is 0 or less, you can't learn or cast that spell. Spell complexity is subtracted from SB, and astrological modifiers further modify it up or down.

On a d100 scale, the convocational modifiers are:

Secondary –20
Neutral –30
Tertiary –40
Diametric –60

Thank you macgorgor

I'm thinking of using those numerals as penalties to the d100 spell casting roll. I feel I need a ruling to let the player know 'hey, this is not your preferred school of magic'. Hence the penalty.

What do you think?

It is entirely posiable that a "average ability" mage with the wrong sunsign would be unable to cast his diametric - ever. Learning even the simplest diametric spell can be quite difficult - even life threateningly danerously difficult. however, learning your diametric is exactly what one has to do if a mage is ever going to learn the whole circle and posiably go "grey" at some point.

HMG has some benchmarks for mages learning spells outside their primary convocation. Mages start with only being able to learn any spell with teaching from another mage and then being able to create new spells in the primary, then secondary, etc.
