Well, I'm cleaning out my places getting ready to move, and came across these in storage. Haven't had a chance to try them, and curious if anyone has heard about them or tried them. Several are Avalon Hill board games.

I got these from a previous job (removing unwanted junk) and rather than tossing them, took them home instead.

Midway (1964)

Diplomacy (1959). I have the 1976 edition.

Afrika Korps (1964)

King Maker (1974)

Dark Horse Classic (1989)

Diplomacy is simply the greatest tabletop game ever made. But you need at least five, preferably seven players. It plays in an evening, or it plays nicely in a turn-a-day or turn-a-week mode, if your social situation allows it. I strongly recommend it, if you have any chance of getting that kind of party together.

Midway, Afrika Korps, and Kingmaker are standard wargames of the age. Fun games, if you enjoy strategy wargames and can find an opponent. I don't know the others.

Kingmaker, Catan, Risk and Diplomacy are my four favourite boardgames (in that order)

Kingmaker plays out the war of the roses. There are numerous nobles, castles, cities, ships, mercies, and heirs for the players to control and wage war over the battlefield of England. The combat system is fun and there is scope for player interaction (politics). It is one of the few 'war' games that I've come across that people who don't enjoy wars still enjoy playing.

Diplomacy is set around european war of WW1 vintage - though it is very abstract. In terms of the game physical mechanics is a bit boring (and a bit risk like - unlike risk it isn't who has the most counters, but by neutralising each others threats, a group of players can mutually attack or defend each other). What sets it apart is the orders system and the player interactions (which are all around diplomacy and diplomacy. This is a great game for PBM (I remember games lasting months with weekly turns and eagily awaiting the post (this is before email)).

I don't think I've given either game justice.

I'd recommend Kingmaker for any Harnic, especially if you are in to the KSC. Diplomacy is great if you want to spend more time thinking and plotting than moving counters.

Ps: there are two Kingmaker games, and I can't remember if AH's version is the "good one" - the other one is just a counter based combat game and no where near the same fun.

EDIT: I've now browsed the pictures - they are the version I know and love. I you didn't want it, I'd buy it off you - except for the cost of postage ;-)

I've played the first four years ago. Liked King Maker. GDW when they were around did a version of Midway, rather time intensive but a good game. Those were simpler games in a simpler time....

One of these days I will arrange a games night at my club, starting with Diplomacy. If that catches on, Kingmaker is next. Someday - Civilization!

I've played Diplomacy, Kingmaker, Midway, and Afrika Korps.

I still own the first three. 8)

I am in agreement with many...diplomacy is one of the best board games that I have played.
