I notice in the discussion of the Kingdom updates that people mention wanting Orbaal or Melderyn next as opposed to say the Thardic Republic Azadmere, or Chybisa.

Is there some type of general sentiment as to order writers and fans want? I may missed a previous discussion.

So far we have updates to Kanday, Kaldor, Evael, and now Rethem.

Personally I would love too see Tharda, Orbaal, then Melderyn. This order even though I often plan adventures in Melderyn. Tharda is one of the most confusing states in the game and an update to the little that is available would be great.

You're unlikely to see another state in the west straight away since the last two published are in the west. So you are looking at one to the east or north (in alphabetical order): Azadmere, Chysiba, Melderyn or Orbaal.

My two favourite kingdoms are Orbaal and Melderyn so I'd be happy with either of those. Chybisa and Azadmere are both small and fairly easy to knock out - Chybisa to me has a lot of potential as a "starter" kingdom since it is small enough for a GM to easily handle, but it is easy to go from there to Kaldor, Melderyn or a wilderness adventure.

Tharda will probably take a long time to do, so I wouldn't be adding it you your Xmas list for any year in the near future ;-)

Well, the way it works is simple, if sub-optimal: the whole writing and production staff is basically part-time volunteers with day jobs who write HarnStuff for fun. Naturally they want to write what's most fun. CGI tries to provide some guidance, but realistically you can't compel a volunteer to write something that he doesn't want to write for very long.
The current team works very well together. Each contributor knows that his/her favorite thing will be a priority sometime, and the cost of that is diligent assitance on someone else's project now.
Two kingdoms in the works now are Azadmere and Orbaal. The reason they are in the works is that there are people who are writing them right now. They are both far off; it takes a really long time to do a kingdom well (as we just saw with Rethem).
A good rule of thumb: never hold up your campaign waiting for a CGI release!

John the Oracle speaks! As I said on another thread, one of them will be released on the Harns' hundreth (no pun here folks, sorry) anniversary.

What makes Tharda particularly complicated?

I'd say the Senate is possibly the most complex element, one that has to be carefully addressed.

Not to mention the patron-client relationships that form the principal aspect of social interaction.

Have you ever tried looking at who holds what lands in Tharda?

I think the difficult bit is producing a balanced write-up which provides significant new insight to the state without excluding any one of the many different views on what the place is like. Probably Tharda has more different, and more divergent, views of how it is than any other state. Some view Tharda as having a culture akin to, say Kanday or Rethem, whereas others would argue for a Roman republic analogue. Tharda is also difficult because of its large (geographic) size and the fact it closely borders on to two detailed states (Kanday and Rethem) - that is a lot of work to do, and then a vast amount of consistency checking.

On the other hand, with Tharda the west would be complete. I find it difficult to set a political or military campaign in Rethem or Kanday without having Tharda. There are so many ways the three states influence each other. There's a lot of exchange between the states and the huge possibilty of a large scale war.

And that's not the only reason I'd prefer to get Tharda next. In my opinion it's the most interesting and fascinating region on Hârn. The unique culture, the potential for intrigue and action, the open religious climate, the mighty river Thard, the big lake and so on. And there is Coranan, the biggest city on the isle, which deserves more attention.

I never played a game in Tharda because there's not much material out there. But I hope that's changing sometime in the not too distant future.

Regards,
R.

IMO a HarnClassic treatment of Thardic Republic should be a high priority now.
HarnClassics of Coranan and Shiran would also be important, but they take longer to do because the cities get new maps and plans, and are broken into neighborhoods to get them "up to code".

My favourit would be the Kingdom of Melderyn, because
- it is the link to the continent
- I miss the maps!

True dat. Any Tharda module is going to leave a lot of people unhappy. I suspect a lot of GMs like Tharda because it is a relatively blank slate that they can adapt to a wide variety of gaming sub-genres. I have always played it as the Italy of Machiavelli and Shakespeare, but others have a more "Roman" take.
