Black Friday is traditionally the big shopping day of the year in the run-up to Christmas. All the retailers get "in the black", because most of their profit for the year is tied up in that one day.

To refine the definition: The friday that follows Thanksgiving in the USA is called "Black Friday since a large portion of the workforce uses it as a Holiday/sickday. They then go out and spend the better part of a month's pay for Christmas gifts.

And you wonder why some of us lament the commercialization of Christ's birth. Not the merchants though, definitely not the merchants ...

Black Friday is infamous for "Doorbuster" sales, in which (for example) the first 100 people in the store can get a wide-screen plasma TV for $299 (or some other fabulous deal - I don't know what TVs go for these days). Stores often open at 12:01 am, and tt is not uncommon for people to have been camped out for hours to ensure their spot in line to save money. Sometimes people are trampled in a consumerist frenzy.
As my wife and I drove home last night from Thanksgiving Dinner at my brother's place, we passed a 1-mile backup of cars trying to get into the outlet mall in Wrentham, MA. After we passed the exit, we could see a 2-mile backup coming the other direction (from Boston). Obviously the cars were backed up because there was no remaining parking; they go in groups to drop off one family member of friend to hold the place in line.

I worked a black Friday at a Target store once. It was a madhouse. I got to work at 5:30 a.m. and the parking lot was almost full. The store didn't open till 6:00. Funny thing was there was no "Door buster" sales, or any other sales that day.

Nope. A day that's holy, reserved for mass worship. Hence, a holy day.

In my neck o' the wood, we call any Friday that falls on the 13th day of the month "Black Friday". There's usually one, rarely two Black Friday's a year. Lottery ticket sales go through the roof on those days (Black Friday is supposed to be unlucky, so of course Aussies do the opposite; like calling a very tall man Shorty, or a red head "Bluey").

"Doorbuster" sales are almost always AFTER Christmas here. :) Generally starting on Jan 2, every retail store hold a post-Christmas sale, and doors have been busted...

Today in Massachusetts is supposed to be Small-Business Saturday, to encourage those frenzied shoppers to give small businesses a chance. We get so inundated by mega-store marketing that people can forget about the cute shops and boutiques in the plazas and downtown - in those towns that still have a downtown! Many towns have lost their commercial centers as heavily-marketed big box stores built along the highways draw away all the business.
